Ghana's high jump record-holder, Rose Yeboah, says she would not hesitate to move abroad to continue her development if she gets an opportunity.
The 21-year-old won Ghana's only medal at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China, claiming gold in High Jump. The medal is also Ghana's first accolade from the games since its establishment in 1992.
Benjamin Azamati, Isaac Botsio and Paul Amoah are among recent Ghanaian athletes who have had to move overseas to continue their education and development after breaking through.
Yeboah, who is currently with the University of Cape Coast, says an opportunity to travel outside will mean she gets better as she would be presented with improved infrastructure.
"If the opportunity comes for me to go [abroad], I will go and continue my training there," she said on her arrival from the FISU Games on Tuesday, August 8.
"In Ghana, there are lack of facilities but [abroad] there are more and better facilities which will help enhance my performance and help me qualify or do a better height more than what I have done."
With her gold medal at the games, Yeboah has gained qualification to compete at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest slated for late August.
The 21-year-old says she is excited to get another opportunity to improve and will do her best.
“I am impressed to be one of the athletes to be heading to the World Athletics Championships because not everyone has gotten this opportunity,” she said.
“If I have gotten it, then I have to use it well and I am impressed to be part of the team as well.”
