The just ended 3rd edition of the GTBANK supper zonal soccer championship produced an amazing moments at the El-Wak sports stadium where young talents were unearthed that when well-groomed will form the bedrock of the country’s sports.
The competition which featured teams from four zones representing a total number of forty four second cycle institutions saw Zone 1 usurped the throne of supremacy to dethrone defending champions zone 2 in the boys division.
After a mouthwatering clash in the finals when zone 1 who are made up of players from Accra Academy, Kaneshie Secondary Technical, Christian Methodist SHS, Ebenezer S.H.S, Sacred Heart Sec/Tec, Odorgonno thrashed defending champions Zone consisting of Accra High, PRESEC Teshie, PRESEC Osu, ST Thomas Aquinas, Kinbu Senior High, Oreilly Senior High 2-0 in the soccer championship to claim the Principal cup.
In the Ladies finals Zone three emerged winners after defeating zone two 2-0 to boss the women’s division.
The 2-day fiercely-contested soccer championship is always a magnificent spectacle which produces great young sports men and women and managing director of Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited, sponsor of the event, Mr. Lekan Sanusi, says they are keen to continue their relentless efforts towards the success of the games.
“Promoting sports, football in particular is what we believe in so each and every year we (GTBANK) will be coming back because we want to make sure we continue to support this competition,”Lekan Sanusi said.
In the previous edition, Miss Nina Norshie of St. John’s Grammer Senior High School in Accra through the championship earned a call up into the National Under-20 team; the Black Princesses and Lekan Senusi feels “it’s been an interesting story”
He noted that “It was quite heartwarming to note that one of the players in the last competition was actually called up into the national team.”
The two winning zones took home a trophy each, and certificates were awarded to all participating students. Individual players who excelled during the competition -- i.e Goal King and Queen, Best Goalkeeper (male and female), Best Defender (male and female) and Best Player (male and female) -- were awarded with cash prizes of GHC 1,000 each.
