The Coordinator of the National Volunteer Service, Mr George Gado, notes colonialism has resulted in psychological misdirection of the youth.
He said the problem, which had made the youth to prefer foreign culture and goods to local ones, was the greatest challenge facing them.
Mr Gado was speaking at the Mfantseman District Youth Achievers Award Ceremony at Mankesim. It was organized by FED KASTLE Promotions, a local non-governmental organisation.
He said: "The youth are fast losing their local identity and have imbued foreign ideas."
Mr Gado cited that there were good educational institutions in the country but some people decided to go abroad for their education.
Mr Gado urged the youth to discard the notion that one could make it in life only if he or she travelled abroad and that "there is money in the country and one can make it through hard work."
The Omanhene of Nkusukum Traditional Area, Okese Essandoh VIII, advised Ghanaians to change their attitude to time management since the nation would not progress if the people continued to mismanage time.
He appealed to organizers of functions to start at the stipulated time.
Okese Essandoh said: "If, for instance, a guest speaker comes to a function late and he or she has to go back with the speech, next time that person would be punctual," in reaction to the fact that the ceremony was delayed for nearly three hours.
20 persons from the area were honoured for their hard work and dedication to duty.
