Given the government’s commitment to addressing the youth unemployment problem,it has developed a 10-module Youth Employment Programme to form the first phase of a two-phased programme.
The first phase, which commenced this year, is focused on short term activities to create employment opportunities for the youth and it involves youth in Agri Business, Youth in Trade and Vocations, Youth in ICT and Community Protection Systems.
The rest are Waste and Sanitation Management Corps, Rural Education Teacher Assistants, Paid Internship and Industrial Attachments, Vacation Jobs as well as Volunteer Services.
The Youth in Agri-business is to provide employment to the youth in agricultural related activities and ventures and to encourage them to take up agriculture as an occupation. The range of agricultural activities covers crop production, animal production, post harvest activities, marketing and distribution as well as agro-processing and transportation.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Cape Coast, Ms. Mercy Arhin disclosed this at the 22nd Municipal Framers’ and fishermen’s day celebration at Koforidua in the Cape Coast Municipality.
She said agricultural development has the shared responsibility between the government and the people who are the direct beneficiaries and therefore called for a linkage where each partner plays a unique but complementary role in the development of agriculture.
She mentioned government initiatives aimed at addressing unemployment as skills training employment placement programme, the national youth fund, the president’s special initiative as well as various micro-credit schemes to support small-scale enterprises all of which yielded relative success in the area of providing self-employment opportunities for the youth.
