The Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) has pledged its unwavering solidarity and support to the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union (GMWU) to demonstrate against Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited for sacking over 60 workers for joining the union.
The TUC described the company’s action as a demonstration of bad faith as it is in breach of the labour law.
“The constitution allows every Ghanaian, whether you are a manager, ordinary worker, in the private sector, public sector or even the informal sector to join or form a union”, said the Secretary General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah said on BusinessLive on Joy News.
“So whoever is saying that private sector company workers cannot form a union is totally wrong”, he added.
The GMWU says it has since the last quarter of 2021 initiated the process of unionising the workers of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited when over 60 employees applied to join the union.
But so far the process has been fraught with wilful interferences, threats, intimidation leading to the termination of the appointments of the over 60 workers of the company.
It is against this backdrop that the union is calling on management of the Sunon-Asogli Power Limited to, within the next 24 hours, reinstate the over 70 workers sacked for joining the Union.
The union said failure by the management to heed to this call will result in the unleashing of the entire TUC on the company by way of a massive demonstration.
Dr. Baah said “we are talking about the rights of workers within the labour law to form a union and nobody can stop them, not even the President of Ghana can stop workers from forming a union.”
Dr. Baah also indicated that its quest to get Sunon Asogli workers unionise seeks to “protect the rights of Ghanaian workers, especially those who are working under foreign hands, to exercise their rights as Ghanaians.”
“We respect the rights of employers and expect employers to respect or right”, he added
He however looked forward to ‘an amicable solution’ by March 8, 2023 given the role the Minister of Employment, among other stakeholders are playing.
