Deputy Information and National Orientation Minister, Mr. Frank Agyekum, has said that calls for the scrapping of the ministry are misplaced.
He said as long as government business needs to be communicated to the people, that duty cannot be shirked, and it does not really matter which institution in government undertakes it.
Frank Agyekum was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show and told host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that the functions of the ministry cannot be abolished.
“For every government no matter where you are, you need to communicate your policies and your programmes to the people and somebody must do it. So whether you put it under the presidency or whether you put it under the Ministry of Communications …that function is being performed so to me it becomes a bit superfluous.”
He maintained that even if the objective of those raising the calls is to save money, the activity would still need to be performed under if the Ministry was merged with or submerged under another body.
A communications expert and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Kwasi Ansu Kyeremeh is the latest to call for the abolishing of the Information Ministry, arguing that budgetary allocations to that ministry should be used to support the Communications Ministry to better address the communications needs of the society.
Professor Ansu Kyeremeh said the functions of the Information Ministry do not warrant the establishment of a full ministry.
