Some residents of the Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region have lauded their Member of Parliament (MP), Farouk Aliu Mahama, for prioritising development in the area.
Mr Mahama has represented the Yendi constituency in Parliament since 2020, running on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to his constituents, the MP has brought about more transformation in the Yendi municipality over the past four years than any of his predecessors.
Constituents, including sitting assembly members of the Yendi Municipal Assembly, told Joy News that Mr Aliu Mahama has significantly contributed to the development of various communities in the area, providing potable water, improving road infrastructure, building school facilities, and creating employment opportunities.
Abdulai Nashiru, a teacher at the Yendi Jubilee Junior High School, praised the MP for his contributions to education in the region.
He specifically highlighted the "Farouk Aliu Mahama Teachers' Award", which the MP recently introduced in the municipality, as a major boost to the teaching profession.
"In fact, when you look at the educational sector, he has done well. The Farouk Aliu Mahama Teachers' Award was the first of its kind; we have never seen such an initiative in this constituency. Looking at the benefits of the award, it will help us a lot as teachers," he said.
The Assembly Member for the Yendi Secondary School Electoral Area, Muntaro Mohammed, described the MP as a "light to the North." He also noted that the MP had initiated numerous development programmes across all 30 electoral areas in the constituency.
"His coming to my electoral area has brought tremendous development in terms of roads, water, electricity extension, and human empowerment," Mohammed said. "His presence has enlightened the system," he emphasised.
Another constituent praised Mr Mahama for his leadership, saying, "He has done a lot since he became an MP. He even did a lot before he became the MP, and I think these are marks of good leadership."
Over the past four years, the residents also noted that Mr Mahama’s initiatives have led to the construction of about one hundred mechanised boreholes, the building of school blocks, the rehabilitation of dilapidated infrastructure, and the development of human capacity.
While they acknowledged that these projects did not come directly from the MP’s personal funds, they highlighted his efforts to lobby for them, ensuring that Yendi benefited from government resources.
As a result, the residents have promised to vote massively for Mr Mahama in the upcoming elections to keep him in Parliament.
Mr Farouk Aliu Mahama is the son of the late Aliu Mahama, former Vice President of the Republic, who served the nation from 2001 to 2009.
He passed away in November 2012. Recently, the MP announced that preparations are underway to rename the northern part of the famous Eastern Corridor Road in honour of his late father.
