Accomplished sports journalist Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has called on Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku and his Executive Council to resign following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on Joy Sports Link, Ankrah expressed deep frustration with the GFA's leadership and their inability to inspire confidence in the national team. He argued that without the support and spirit of the Ghanaian people, the Black Stars cannot thrive.
"There is no way the national team can succeed if the spirit of the people do not back you," Ankrah said. "It's like a child who has been cursed by his parent; you will need to go back and plead for forgiveness and blessings from your parents."
The experienced journalist, who has covered international tournaments, covered four FIFA World Cups, criticised the GFA for poor decision-making and a lack of accountability.
"Where we are now, maybe the drivers are not the ones who will get us to the end of the tunnel. You have tried your best; your best is not enough. I think you need to make way or find solutions," Ankrah stated.
He further lambasted the GFA’s mismanagement of the technical team and its inability to maintain the unity and spirit that previously defined the Black Stars.
"You've sacked coaches; it hasn't worked. Five in five, we have changed players; we have invited a whole lot of players, and we still didn't seem to find what we needed to qualify for the AFCON," he said.
Ankrah underscored the crucial role of team spirit in the Black Stars' historic successes, something he believes is now missing.
"The most depressing part of the Black Stars' slump right now, and one that I fear, is the spirit of the team. The Black Stars are spirit less, no spirit, and that for me is more crucial than any other external factors," he lamented.
He dismissed the GFA's plans for a stakeholders meeting as inadequate to address the root causes of the national team’s decline.
"Stakeholders meeting to look forward after our failure to qualify for the AFCON? I don't think that is the problem. It is a matter of bad decisions, taking the wrong path; it's a whole list. We need to have people take responsibility," Ankrah asserted.
The journalist questioned the continued tenure of the GFA leadership despite the team's poor record.
"If this was Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, England, France, Germany – where in the world would you have such an embarrassing record, and the people in charge are still there?" he asked.
Ankrah also warned of the eroding public trust in the Black Stars, calling it a national tragedy.
"My problem again is that the confidence of Ghanaians has gotten to a stage where people are not even putting their spirit behind the team. If you go out on the street, people have lost confidence. They don't want to hear about the Black Stars, and for me, that is a tragedy," he concluded.
Ankrah's passionate critique adds to the growing calls for a complete overhaul of the GFA leadership as Ghana grapples with its footballing future.
