The Paramount Chief of Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Otuo Serebuo II, has urged Ghanaians to invest in planting trees to help sustain the environment.
In line with the Green Ghana Initiative, the Environmental Protection Agency planted trees in three selected schools at Juaben in the Ashanti region to increase climate resilience.
The exercise formed part of activities rolled out by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) to mark the World Environment Day on Ecosystem Restoration.
At a tree planting exercise in the area to commemorate World Environment Day, Nana Otuo Serebuo II reiterated the need for Ghanaians to plant more trees.
“The environment is changing rapidly due to the destruction of the forests and water bodies through human activities. We can restore the ecosystem by planting more trees. It’s a civic responsibility to protect the environment.
“Let’s put away our political affiliation and protect the environment from securing a better future for the next generation”, the Chairman of the Council of State noted.
Ghana is commemorating World Environment Day on the theme: “Growing Trees and Greening Cities”.
Head of Field Operations of EPA, Irene Amankwah, emphasized the need to restore the ecosystem. The EPA has promised to engage traditional leaders to protect the environment.
“We need to replenish the ecosystem through the planting of trees because Ghana has lost some animal and tree species due to deforestation.
"We will continue to engage traditional leader’s stakeholders, especially to protect the environment from further destruction”, she emphasised.
World Environment Day is celebrated across the globe on June 5, to promote the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
