World Cup winner Marcel Desailly sculptured by Waldron

Former France captain Marcel Desailly was honoured with the unveiling of a sculptured image of himself by UK-based firm Image and Likeness on Friday.

The unveiling of the statue which was done by Ghana’s Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga at the Lizzy Sports Complex was in celebration of the lifetime achievements of the former France captain.

Desailly, 46, after 20 years of active football and several years of ambassadorial roles has used his time and image to promote through the power of football to change lives especially amongst children.

His state of the art Lizzy Sports Complex provides the quality facilities needed for the next generation of Ghanaian kids to also aspire to achieve greatness as he did during his playing career.

Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga hailed the impact made by the former AC Milan and Chelsea star at the event to unveil the sculptured image.

“We live in the times where people who have achieved greatness keep their route to success as a secret from others who also aspire to achieve same,” he said.

“But this is someone who through hard work of training with good facilities and with some technical support, has been able to rise to greatness.

“And he has made such facilities available for Ghanaians so as to also help them get to that level.”

The unveiled image was sculptured by doctor Gerry Waldron who agreed to Desailly’s request for another of such his works to honour the memory of his late mother, Elizabeth.
