Workers of Logs and Lumber Limited, a timber firm in Kumasi, have laid down their tools to demand payment of delayed salary and improved working conditions.
Over 20 timber trucks are packed at the entrance of the Asokwa yard of the company, as the demonstrators prevent company officials from entering the premises.
Management is currently unable to enter the premises because of curses invoked by one of the workers.
The agitated workers are calling on some of the managers to resign.
“As at the 22nd of August, July salary has not been paid… the company has denied us transport allowance, medical allowance, rent allowance. Management intimidates, maltreats, cheat us, embarrass us, threatening to sack if you complain or bully us”, one of the workers told Luv Fm.
Assistant Personnel Manager, Georgina Smedley, attributes the delayed salary payment to export challenges.
She however tells Luv Fm the action of the workers is unfortunate because funds have already been secured to pay them.
