The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and President of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA), Mrs. Jean Mensa, is set to host a distinguished delegation of women Chairpersons from eight Election Management Bodies (EMBs) across Africa.
The delegates will include representatives from Cape Verde, Liberia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The meeting, organised under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Regional Service Centre for Africa and the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division, is a collaborative effort with International IDEA, the AAEA, and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
This significant gathering aims to provide a platform for the women leaders to establish a continental network of senior electoral administrators, fostering peer support among women in election management leadership across Africa.
The agenda for the meeting will include reviewing international and regional normative frameworks on women's political participation in Africa. By doing so, the participants seek to enhance the role and influence of women in political processes and election management on the continent.
Deputy Chairman of Operations at the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Mr. Samuel Tettey, stressed the importance of this initiative, emphasising the critical role that women leaders play in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive political participation.
The two-day event will take place in Accra on the 5th and 6th of August, 2024, and is expected to be a landmark event in advancing women's leadership in electoral administration across Africa.
