The Ho Central Market was given a fresh look by women including queens during a three-hour clean up exercise in Ho organized by the Volta Region branch of Department of Women.
The event formed part of the re-launch of the Women’s Week celebration to commemorate the achievement of women in the country.
Women’s groups and some individual women got to the market as early as 0500 hours in response to a call by the Department of Women to clean every nook and cranny of the market.
Madam Lena Alai, Volta Regional Coordinator of Department of Children, commended the women for responding enthusiastically to the call.
She urged the market women to ensure that they undertook their trading activities especially in foodstuffs in a very clean environment in order to safeguard the health of their customers.
“Women were generally associated with cleanliness, so you should live up to that standard.”
At one end of the market stood a mountain of refuse close to which fresh foodstuffs and fruits were openly displayed for sale.
People bought and instantly ate fruits they had bought near the heap of refuse without washing them.
Mr Hopeson Dzahene, Ho Municipal Supervisor of Zoomlion, a sanitation company responsible for refuse disposal in the town, commended the women for their effort and said steps were being taken to clear the refuse at the market.
