An iced water seller, Diana Ganyo, has been arraigned before the Greater Accra Circuit Court for allegedly abducting a 12-year-old girl and handing her over to a man to be defiled.
The man, Vincent Afeti, 25, a drinking bar operator, and another man, Agbeko Togla, have also been arraigned before the court and charged with defilement and threat of death respectively.
They have all pleaded not guilty. Prosecuting, ASP George Abavelim told the court that early this year, Vincent proposed love to the victim, who then reported him to the complainant, Bright Yeboah, her guardian.
He said Yeboah quickly warned Vincent to stay away from the girl because she was a minor.
He said not long after that, Yeboah travelled and placed the girl under the care of his cousin, and when he returned he was told that the girl had been away from home for three days.
"The complainant then confronted the girl, who confessed that during his absence she, indeed, did not sleep at home for three days,” ASP Abavelim said.
According to the prosecutor, the girl told the complainant that it was Ganyo who told her that Vincent wanted to see her and that she dared not refuse his call as he was a jujuman who might use his powers to kill her if she did so.
“The victim, out of fear, followed Diana to Vincent’s house, where she slept for three days,” the prosecutor said.
He said Yeboah, based on that information, confronted both Vincent and Ganyo but they both denied the story until later the complainant noticed signs of pregnancy in the victim and received information from reliable sources that the girl had often been seen in the company of Vincent.
ASP Abavelim said Yeboah confronted Vincent again, but this time the accused admitted that the girl was his girlfriend.
He said a report was then made to the police and both Vincent and Ganyo were arrested.
According to him, while investigations were still going on, the third accused, Agbeko, met Yeboah at the police station where he asked the latter to withdraw the case for settlement at home.
He said, apparently not satisfied with the complainant’s response, Agbeko threatened to kill him if he did not withdraw the case, and he was subsequently arrested after a report had been made.
ASP Abavelim said during investigations, Vincent admitted the offence but Ganyo and Agbeko denied it.
Ganyo and Agbeko have been granted bail, while Vincent has been remanded in police custody.
