Who is to tell the truth about china

The truth is very difficult to ascertain when dealing with nations that have smart citizens with the potency of advancing plausible arguments. It, therefore, demands divine intervention for the truth to be revealed as it was in the case of Solomon, a Bible character, when he was confronted with the problem of determining, who the biological mother of a demised baby was. The entire world is now at the crossroads of determining the real status of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in terms of her economic gains, political systems, human rights records and the current Tibet issue. Should China tell her own story, or the Western media or an eyewitness? To this Writer it would be a fallacy of hasty conclusion to state that all stories aired by BBC and CNN about China in the face of the current world economic power struggle are true. Stories carried by Chinese media houses can also not be accepted wholly as the entire truth about China neither would independent eyewitness' account because individuals have their biases. Yes, all these stories, therefore, compels this Writer be factual and to present China in the way he saw that country when he had the privilege to visit China in June 2008. This Writer was in Beijing to participate in a Professional Programme for African Journalists and that opportunity has made a profound impact on his perception about China and the Chinese people. He was virtually overawed and fell in love with the culture and socio-economic development of the world's most populous country and had since forged an indissoluble bond with China's culture and development drive. During his 15 days stay in Beijing, China he noted that the country, driven by its Communist Government and wheeled by the market economy has grown rapidly within 20 years and has turned the Chinese society into a smooth running machine. The Chinese people, like gears connected to each other, have to adjust their living rhythms in accordance with the machine and do not waste time. They hold the view that a person's feeling of happiness is directly proportional to his or her material possessions. In China, the daily habits such as taking public transport, riding bicycles, eating organic food, wearing clothes made from natural fibres and buying second-hand items have become commonplace among Chinese professionals. It is, therefore, a normal social phenomenon, as observed elsewhere in Europe, for residents of affluent districts to commute in public transit, shop at flea markets and generally base their lifestyles on the principles of health, thrift and environmental awareness. The Communist government, secretly founded over 86 years ago has ensured to a large extent an equitable distribution of resources among the people. What pertains in China contrasts markedly with the situation in Ghana, where a few have everything while the majority of the populace wallow in poverty, squalor and affliction. Local farmers at a village in the Guizhov Province told this Writer that they did not have the urge to migrate to the cities because they enjoyed a replica of whatever existed in Beijing, China. The Government has also lived up to the task of feeding sufficiently its 1.3 billion Chinese people even in the face of global food crisis. It has transformed its administrative mode from that of a planned economy to a service-oriented government that accords with the market economy and competently meets the challenges of globalization. Made in China goods come in a gamut of qualities and prices. This Writer discovered that African businessmen in their bid to maximize profit at the expense of consumers back at home mainly import inferior goods from China to African market under the guise of affordability. The Communist Government appears disturbed about this development and is likely to come out with a trade policy to reverse the trend. The China People's Congress (CPC) as the single ruling Party has the motto: "Keep Your Differences But Obey The Constitution". This principle engenders media openness, press freedom, freedom of speech and to information. On the lighter note Chinese event organizers do not have to offer 'soli' to Journalists. This is because unlike their counterparts in Ghana media owners do not give them employment letters and ask them to get out there and make money to pay themselves. China's rich cultural heritage and her hospitality, which can be likened to Ghanaian hospitality, were very refreshing. They have respect for the Elderly and, therefore, do not challenge their decisions. They accept the responsibility to take care of their parents until their demise. Traditional Chinese defends and do not usually attack. It is not always the issue of "fighting for my right" unlike what prevails in the Western world. China's economy, culture and its peoples' livelihoods are in tune with the contemporary grim and complex international situation. China considers African countries as its friends and is committed to a new Sino-Africa strategic partnership based on trust, sincerity, equality, mutual support and common development. China has come of age having gone through a long history from a primitive society, slave society, feudal and semi-feudal society, and semi-colonial society to the present socialist society. Yes, China's history should teach Africans to wake up from their slumber and sweep away the poverty hunger and diseases plaguing the Continent. Source: GNA
