Samuel Appiah Darko, Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has defended the institution’s handling of the case involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile programme on Saturday, 15th February, Darko insisted that the OSP had been fair in its approach, emphasising that the office formally communicated with Ofori-Atta before declaring him a fugitive.
Addressing the public backlash over the declaration, Mr Darko stressed that the OSP had followed due process and had given Ofori-Atta ample opportunity to cooperate.
“We did not act arbitrarily. We wrote to him, and he was fully aware of our requests. If he had responded appropriately, this situation would not have escalated,” he stated.
He maintained that the former minister’s failure to engage with the OSP’s investigations warranted the necessary legal actions.
Mr Darko further clarified that the decision to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive was not politically motivated but rather a consequence of his lack of cooperation.
He argued that public officials must be held accountable and should not be seen to evade investigative processes.
“No one is above the law, and our responsibility is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their status, faces due process,” he added.
