Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has revealed that the government is contemplating the possibility of implementing visa waivers for African nations.
This move follows the recent decisions made by Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa to open their doors to African travelers without the need for visas.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Wednesday, November 8, the Minister expressed Ghana's intention to follow the example of other African nations.
"We are seriously thinking about it, and we are on the drawing board looking at it."
Additionally, she also highlighted Ghana's aspirations to attract individuals of African descent from the diaspora to enable them to connect with their ancestral homeland.
The Foreign Affairs Minister disclosed that the government is collaborating with the Ministries of Interior and Tourism to work out the details of the visa waiver agreement. She assured that a decision will be announced soon.
In a related development, Ghana and South Africa have recently inked a visa waiver agreement. This accord enables citizens of both nations to travel freely for business and tourism purposes without visa restrictions. The agreement became effective on November 1, 2023.
This visa waiver arrangement is anticipated to stimulate trade and tourism between Ghana and South Africa, marking a positive step in the deepening of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
