The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will make some inroads in the parliamentary election of the Manhyia Constituency this December despite the area being a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party.
According to the party’s Deputy National Organiser, Elikem Kotoko, the people of Manhyia seem to be losing confidence in the NPP, which is why many young voters say they will not participate in the upcoming election.
He argued that although the incumbent, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, won the election in 2020, it was by a significantly lower margin, which he interprets as the constituency losing confidence in the NPP.
Mr Kotoko’s comments come after a private legal practitioner, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, defeated Nana Owusu Prempeh, a brother to the outgoing MP.
Mr Awuah polled 376 votes to beat Nana Owusu Prempeh, who garnered 141 votes.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Election Brief, he said it was not surprising that Nana Owusu Prempeh lost the party’s parliamentary primary on Sunday.
He argued that people were tired of the incumbent and wanted to try another individual.
This, he said, was a good signal for the NDC as it attests to the fact that the party has an advantage.
"If you look at recent happenings as well, it may be one of the major reasons. It is not also surprising that his [Dr Prempeh's] younger brother who I am told was in the contest could not secure victory.
"Definitely, the people of Manhyia will not wish to have a similar character like the very incumbent whose fortunes were dwindling over time and therefore they settled on someone different," he said.
The Deputy National Organiser said the NDC has taken note of the concerns of the constituents and is convinced the party can capture political power.
“The NDC is very prepared to address matters that will make sure that we make a great impact in Manhyia South and all other places we consider to be our opponent’s stronghold,” he added.
In the 2020 election for instance, the NPP's Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh polled 27,985 votes as against the NDC's Abubakar Sulemana who polled 5,047 votes.
