‘We will fulfil our promises for the sports sector’ – Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister nominee, Kofi Adams, has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to delivering on all promises made to the sports sector ahead of the 2024 elections.

Among the key pledges, the government vowed to construct national stadiums in regions without one, upgrade the Winneba Sports College into a full-fledged sports university, and introduce allowances for footballers across various tiers of Ghanaian football.

During his vetting, Adams responded to a question from former Sports Minister Mustafa Ussif, stressing that the government remains dedicated to honouring these commitments.

Exchange between Ussif and Adams

Mustafa Ussif: In your manifesto, you indicated that you will pay players in the Premier League, as well as the first and second divisions, allowances. Can you tell us how much this will cost and whether you will fulfil this promise?

Kofi Adams: We are committed to every manifesto promise. We will discuss them in detail and ensure we implement them to the satisfaction of everybody when it comes to sports.

Adams also addressed concerns about his lack of direct experience in sports, assuring Ghanaians of his determination to succeed in the role.

“I know many Ghanaians are happy about my nomination. I will not disappoint them, I will not disappoint President John Dramani Mahama, and I will not disappoint myself,” he said.

With his vetting now complete, Adams awaits the Appointments Committee’s approval to officially take up the role of Minister for Sports and Recreation under President Mahama’s administration.
