Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu, says there appears to be a decline in the robustness of anti-corruption efforts.
Speaking at the commissioning of 'The Law House' project on June 10, President Akufo-Addo stated that combating corruption has been the cornerstone of his administration.
According to him, corruption thrives in environments where it can be concealed, and that access to information is crucial to fighting corruption.
He noted that to address this, his government ensured the passage of the Right to Information Act (RTI) 2019, ACT 989, during its first term.
Mr. Senanu stated that according to the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), Ghana's best performance was in 2014 with 48 points.
He noted that the period from 2013 to 2015 seems to have been the best in terms of performance.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, he said that “Under this dispensation, it looks like the best performance is actually the lowest in the previous regime. It tells you that we need to take this a lot more seriously.
“Indeed, we have been stagnant for the last four years on the CPI at 43, and most analyses show that countries that are stagnant tend to have a faster decline subsequently, so we are at risk of actually seeing a situation where the fight may just bottom out and then we are not making any gains at all”.
Senanu said that the current administration does not appear to have done significantly more than the previous regime, even though Ghanaians were dissatisfied with the previous one.
He added that comparing the two administrations to determine which was better is not meaningful.
“I think that what happens is that the new forms of strategies being adopted by those in that space, and in each dispensation, one needs to configure and strategise how they are going to tackle corruption”, he added.
