The Ghana Water Resources Commission has called for an immediate halt to illegal mining activities across the country.
The Commission has expressed concern that a few irresponsible individuals are jeopardizing the safety and well-being of the entire Ghanaian population.
In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show on Monday, September 16, Eng. Samson Tettey from the Commission emphasised the urgent need to stop "galamsey."
He highlighted that not all Ghanaians have the means to treat the water in their homes, making it crucial to address the problem promptly.
Mr Tettey urged authorities to take swift action against illegal mining, stressing that it poses a significant threat to the nation's water resources and public health.
He called for decisive measures to curb the menace and protect the country's water supply.
"The side effects of this illegal mining are very serious, and we really need to take that fight seriously. The question is, how many people can afford to treat their water? So that is why I go back to protecting the source so that every Ghanaian is having wholesome water in their home to drink."
"Because some can afford the treatment system and everybody has to drink water, where government and regulatory bodies must come in and take responsibility and make sure this irresponsible mining that few people are gaining from has to be stopped," he said.
