The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) remains steadfast in its ongoing strike, vowing not to back down until their demands are fully addressed.
The Chairperson of the union, Salamatu Braimah, expressed frustration over the government’s failure to honour commitments made during previous negotiations, as members continue to work under expired conditions of service.
Speaking to JoyNews, Mrs Braimah stated that the strike would persist if Wednesday's meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) does not produce favourable outcomes.
“We all know that conditions of service are our work conditions, such as your break time, your leave day, your allowances, and what have you.
“Operating on an expired condition of service means that you don't have, and so we just want them to sit at the table with us so that we can review our conditions of service," she said.
She continued, “The Congress says we should call off the strike. If they are asking us to call off the strike, it means that we are also mandating the stakeholders to sit at the negotiation table with us. It's supposed to be a win-win situation because we are the agreed party.”
Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the NLC, Ofosu Asamoah, has urged the striking unions to call off their action.
He assured that the NLC would advocate for TEWU-TUC’s interests when both parties and other stakeholders meet on Wednesday to discuss solutions to end the industrial action.
This comes after the NLC in a statement issued on November 14, called on the TEWU-TUC to suspend their planned indefinite strike action.
The union announced its intention to strike on Monday, November 18, 2024, citing prolonged delays in finalising and implementing Conditions of Service agreements for staff in the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.
However, the NLC summoned both TEWU and the relevant stakeholders to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, to resolve the matter.
Additionally, the Commission directed the respondent employers, including the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), to provide a detailed status report on the issues in dispute by the close of work on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
