Former President, John Mahama has criticised President Akufo-Addo for consistently exonerating individuals accused of corruption.

He described President Akufo-Addo as a "clearing agent" for dismissing corruption allegations against such individuals.

"We have a president who, when corruption issues arise, simply says nothing happened. That’s why we call him a clearing agent because he comes out to clear the person we claim has stolen the money."

Speaking at a community engagement in Oduman, Amasaman, on Wednesday, August 28, Mr Mahama acknowledged that every nation faces challenges, including the fight against corruption.

He noted that while corruption exists, most governments make efforts to combat it in order to minimise its impact.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer argued that no government in Ghana's history has been more engulfed by corruption than the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He added that Ghanaians are no longer surprised by the frequent corruption-related scandals that continue to emerge under the NPP government.

Mr Mahama also criticised President Akufo-Addo for dismissing concerns about the sale of SSNIT hotels, which sparked significant public outcry.

He accused the president of being out of touch with the sentiments of Ghanaians, saying that if he were in tune with the people, he would know that Ghanaians are tired of corruption.

The NDC flagbearer vowed that if he is re-elected as president, he will not act as a "clearing agent" for corrupt individuals.

"If God favours me and Ghanaians vote for me as the next president, those who have stolen will be held accountable. If you took our money, you will have to return it. This is what I call 'Operation Recover All the Loot'."

He also warned that any appointee in his administration caught engaging in corruption will face consequences.

"We will work hard to ensure that my government’s efforts to fight corruption are given the necessary support. If you get involved in corrupt activities and are caught, don’t expect President John Mahama to save you, because I will not."
