A steering committee member of The Ghana Compact is worried about the degrading nature of leadership in the country.
Dr Yaw Perbi explained that leadership is built on trust and that once trust is eroded leadership ceases to be effective.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo could have done better in his comment while accepting former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah's resignation in the wake of corruption-related allegations against her.
"The foundation of all leadership is trust and so once the trust is eroded, leadership is gone. And that is why people are concerned. Why is the Attorney General calling for the docket? Because there's no trust," he said.
President Akufo-Addo expressed "confidence" in the integrity of the recently resigned Sanitation Minister, seemingly suggesting she would be exonerated after investigations.
But Dr Perbi argued that the president seems to be already clearing somebody who is yet to be investigated. This, he said, raises an issue of trust in the wake of the allegations.
"Why will there be trust when the president has already cleared somebody who's yet to be investigated," he quizzed.
He said such conduct reflects bad leadership and that he is worried that "we are playing with leadership and the high calling that it is."
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has had to resign following allegations of corruption-related activities levelled against her.
This was after it came to light that she had reported her house help and a former house help, for stealing humongous amounts of money from her bedroom.
Patience Botwe, 18 and former housemate, Sarah Agyei, 30 are said to have connived to steal a significant amount of monies, including €300,000 and millions of cedis from the Minister's house at Abelemkpe in Accra.
They are said to have also stolen the personal belongings of the Minister and her husband, with a total of sum of such belongings valued at Gh¢95,000.
Despite seemingly being the victim, the minister has rather become the subject of discussion. Experts and the public have raised concerns about her keeping such huge amounts of money at home instead of in the bank.
Given that she was a public official and had reportedly been entrusted with huge sums of money for various projects under the supervision of her office, some fear the stolen monies could be government funds.
Madam Cecilia in the heat of the allegations, issued a statement saying there were inconsistencies in the discussions of how much was stolen as reported by the media and what she also reported to the police. According to her, she was would clarify the issues later.
This was right before she surprisingly resigned.
However, there have been no clarifications from her.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has taken up the matter for investigation after being inundated with calls to investigate her case.
