Wayne Rooney drew level with Gary Lineker's England goalscoring tally in a 3-2 win over Slovenia in Ljubljana.
Wayne Rooney scored an 86th minute winner as England came from behind to record a 3-2 victory over Slovenia to move to 18 points at the top of Group E.
Rooney's goal was his 48th in an England shirt, bringing him level with Gary Lineker and leaving him just one goal away from matching Bobby Charlton's all-time England scoring record. England trailed after Milivoje Novakovic put Slovenia ahead after 37 minutes, and were behind until the 57th minute when Jack Wilshere equalised with his first ever international goal, a fine strike from just outside the box.
The Arsenal midfielder added a second on 73 minutes with an even more spectacular effort that rocketed into the top left corner.
Former Sheffield Wednesday player Nejc Pecnik levelled the scores on 84 minutes but Rooney grabbed the winner just two minutes later.
The win means England have now won six games from six this campaign and have gone unbeaten in a season for the first time in 24 years.
