Nurses of the Ghana chapter of the West African College of Nurses (WACN) have embarked on a journey to construct an office complex for the local chapter.
WACN, inaugurated in 1981 in the Gambia, is a West African body with membership in six countries; the Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Benin, with the key aim of promoting excellence in nursing and also contribute meaningfully to the improvement of health care within the sub-region.
Members of the Ghana chapter organised a fund raising dinner dance at the Cleaver House in Accra Saturday to raise funds towards the construction of the office complex.
The dinner was chaired by Mr. George Kumi Kyeremeh, Chief Nursing Officer at the Ministry of Health. Also in attendance were Dr. Mrs. Jemima Dennis-Antwi, International Confederation of Mid-Wives country director Anglo-Africa; Mrs. Marian Hornsby Oddoi, Past President of WACN; Mrs. Mary Opare, former Dean of Schooling of Nursing, University of Ghana; Former Ghana Broadcasting Cooperation Boss, Mrs. Eva Lokko and several nurses.
Mrs. Faustina Oware-Gyekye, WACN Ghana chairperson, in a short address emphasised the need to give such a vital body a befitting office here in Ghana, calling on all to come on board to make that dream a reality.
She said the office will in the long run aid in WACN’s quest to fulfill its dream of promoting excellence in nursing and also promote and encourage Nursing and Midwifery research and the training of nurses through workshops.
Mr Egro Kumi, a registered nurse who has participated in several international marathons for British and Ghanaian charities, used the occasion to give a presentation on work-related stress and associated coping skills.
He expressed worry that stress is now a major concern in the world and Ghana is no different. He advised that the working class especially, must try as much as possible to get adequate rest.
Saturday’s dinner dance targeted to raise about GHS10,000. Several similar events, according to the organisers, are expected to follow.
Awards were presented to past executives of the Ghana chapter of WACN.
