Vodafone boss cries foul over GT deal

The Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr Kwabena Donkor, yesterday quoted Sir John Bond, chairman of Vodafone Group PIc, as expressing concern about the integrity of the national fibre optic sold to the Group along with Ghana Telecom last year. He said the Vodafone boss complained that Ghana’s national fibre optic was not as good or valuable as the former government had led them to believe. Dr Donkor made these disclosures in answer to a question at a press briefing on President Mills' recent visit to the U.K. where he met with the Vodafone chairman. Even though the deputy minister would not elaborate further, he said the President told Sir John that the government did not intend to abrogate the deal but would review aspects of it to the satisfaction of both sides. The national fibre optic undersea cables were laid with a 30-million dollar grant from India in 2007 to enhance internet accessibility throughout the country. There was widespread outcry against its inclusion in the sale, when Vodafone bought 70 per cent shares of GT last year for 900 million dollars. The protest was against the background that the government had already spent over 300 million dollars to acquire and lay the fibre optic cables. Source: Times
