Velma’s Millinery & Accessories has unveiled the latest offering from its new A/W19 collection dubbed Gold Coast Queen Collection.
The collection is an artistic evolution with an explosion of the finest craftsmanship which has each piece luxuriously handcrafted at the brand’s atelier in Accra.
Yaa Asantewaa, Fatiha Nkrumah, Efua Sutherland, Monica Amekoafia, Theodosia Salomey Okoh; these illustrious daughters of the erstwhile Gold Coast, a land bursting at the seams with gold and precious minerals had common traits including their Bravery, tenacity, beauty and passion.
Wearing their pride, sophistication and identity on their shoulders, these queens changed their worlds for the good of all.
Inspired by the true African wax textiles and Gold Coast fashion, this collection pays homage to these women and the roles they played to fight for the liberation of their country and Africa.
Fusing old Ghanaian wax print with modern vitality, the classic pieces are made with crystals from Swarovski, mother of pearls, velvet, cowries sea shells, laces and raw Silk which gives an interesting edge and transforms your look into pure elegance.
“It’s a celebration of the past, the present and the future,” says the talented Velma Owusu-Bempah, Creative Director of the brand said.
She added, “this year as Ghana celebrates the year of return, it’s a tribute to the ancestors who were taken out of their homes 400 years ago and the bravery of our people.”
Collection highlights include the crowns which have been worn by actress Joselyn Dumas, Turban hats, headwraps, bandeaus and percher hats that can be worn on all occasions and the perfect accessory for a bad hair day.
“The Gold Coast Queen” is all of the women from African descent and it’s time to wear our crowns like the queens we are,” Owusu-Bempah said.
