After years of enduring severe sanitary challenges, particularly concerning the girls’ toilet facilities, Vakpo Senior High School (SHS) has finally received a much-needed reprieve with the construction of a modern six-seater water closet toilet facility.
This development is expected to significantly enhance the school’s sanitation standards and improve the overall learning environment.
The project, which was spearheaded by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Dayi, Edmond Kudjoh Attah, marks a turning point in the school’s efforts to address hygiene-related issues that have plagued students and staff for years.
The newly commissioned facility is part of a broader commitment by the district to prioritize both education and infrastructure that supports effective teaching and learning.
For years, students, particularly girls, struggled with inadequate and unhygienic toilet facilities. The lack of proper sanitation posed a serious threat to health and dignity, with students often forced to use makeshift or poorly maintained facilities.
This situation frequently disrupted academic activities, as the unhygienic conditions led to illnesses and discomfort.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, DCE Edmond Kudjoh Attah emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure that creates a conducive environment for education.
"Education is not just about classrooms and books; it’s about creating an environment where both students and teachers feel comfortable and supported. Sanitation plays a critical role in this. I am proud to have led this initiative, and I believe it will significantly enhance the school’s academic outcomes," he remarked.
The new facility is expected to have a profound impact on both the health and morale of the school community. Teachers and students alike expressed relief and gratitude for the intervention. The girls, in particular, were excited about the privacy and dignity the new facility affords them.
Headmistress of Vakpo SHS, Grace Agbeko, lauded the district’s intervention, noting that the new facility will reduce absenteeism, especially among female students.
"Access to clean and safe sanitation facilities is a basic necessity for every student. This project is not just about hygiene; it is about restoring confidence and ensuring that our girls can focus on their studies without unnecessary distractions," she said.
The construction of the water closet toilet facility is part of a wider strategy by the North Dayi District Assembly to improve educational infrastructure. DCE Kudjoh Attah reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing critical needs in schools to ensure quality education delivery.
"We are determined to invest in areas that have the greatest impact on education. This includes not only classrooms and learning materials but also facilities that improve the overall wellbeing of students and teachers. Education is the foundation of development, and we will not relent in our efforts to prioritize it," he stated.
The project received strong support from the community, with parents and local leaders commending the district for its dedication to the welfare of students. The assembly also hinted at plans to replicate similar interventions in other schools within the district, ensuring that no institution is left behind in the drive for improved educational infrastructure.
With the completion of this facility, Vakpo Senior High School can now look forward to a healthier and more conducive environment for academic pursuits.
The intervention underscores the importance of addressing basic needs as a prerequisite for quality education and reflects the district's broader vision of fostering development through strategic investments in education and infrastructure.
This new chapter for Vakpo SHS is a testament to what can be achieved when local governments prioritise the welfare of their constituents. It serves as a beacon of hope for other schools facing similar challenges across Ghana.
