Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare has joined calls by President Akufo-Addo and health experts to receive their shots of the procured vaccines when made available to the general public.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Elton Brobbey, he explained that once the vaccine is administered it will reduce the number of deaths considerably and lead the country to herd immunity.
Herd immunity, he explained, is the term used for the immunity by the greater population, giving the country a chance to go back to normal life.
“One of the most important thing about this vaccine, is that it reduces mortality and then it also reduces the morbidity, which means that a lot of people who are now looking for beds in intensive care will stop."
"As I said if we have herd immunity then we can move to places that we have to move to so that socio-economic life can come back to normal,” he said.
Dr Nsiah-Asare stated that unlike some misconceptions about the Covid-19 vaccine, it is safe for all, adding that there has been no serious adverse effect recorded.
However, the Ghana Health Service will be monitoring the progress of people after vaccination to ensure that those who have reported any effect are taken care of, he added.
“What you have been reading and seeing on social media, I will tell everyone to forget about it, there are anti-vaxxers all over and that’s what they normally do.”
“Ghana, we are used to vaccination. We have 13 different vacinations that we give to our chideren before the age of five. Now, it is the time of we the adults, so lets give this one a chance to protect us and prevent us from having Covid-19,” Dr Nsiah-Asare said.
He stated that if two thirds or 70% of the country’s population are vaccinated, Ghana will have herd immunity which will indicate the country is safe.
“Once you have the vaccine you don't take off your mask until about 66% or 70% of us have all taken the vaccines, then, we will have herd immunity. We will advise through the WHO for people to take off their mask,” he said.
