UTAG Strike: We are not protesting on Feb. 8 – USAG

President of University Students Association of Ghana, Christian Philip Armah

The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) has indicated that its members will not be hitting the streets of Accra on Tuesday, February 8, to protest against the ongoing strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

In a press statement, USAG President, Christian Phillip Armah noted that "no such activity or agreement has been reached" as the Association believes in the philosophy of dialogue.

USAG's statement is in reference to a protest to be embarked on by a student group calling itself Concerned University students on Tuesday morning. The group said it will protest what it described as the inaction on the part of government to resolve the strike by University lecturers.

UTAG has been on strike since January 10 with no end in sight despite several meetings and a court order directing the Association and the National Labour Commission (NLC) to resolve their issues out of court.

Meanwhile, USAG has noted that although it recognises the importance of demonstrations in a democratic state, "the times have not called for this measure."

According to the Association, it continues to engage with government and UTAG to reach a consensus to end the ongoing strike action.

"We have made progress thus far with engagements and we are grateful to the continuous cooperation of both parties," USAG added.

Also, USAG has assured that its members shall, "continue to do what is mandated and not be distracted by interest groups who seek to make themselves popular in situations like this out of unnecessary cravings for attention and recognition."
