Mr. Dayford Bumekpor, Inspector of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly Guards, cautioned drivers operating in the area against engaging children under 16 years as drivers’ mates since it contravened the Assembly’s byelaws.
He also advised drivers to obey traffic regulations to avoid accidents on the roads and warned that offenders would not be spared if caught.
Mr. Bumekpor was speaking at the inauguration of a new lorry station at Kunka New Town, a suburb of Obuasi.
The Obuasi branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the concerned Transport Association jointly opened the facility, to prevent the parking of vehicles along the road at Kunka Junction for passengers.
Mr. Bumekpor appealed to drivers to cooperate with the guards of the assembly to ensure sanity at the new station.
Nana Ayensu, Welfare Chairman of the GPRTU, advised drivers to respect the dignity of passengers and appealed to the Assembly to construct pavements and provide basic infrastructure at the station.
Mr. Isaac Fordjour, assemblyman for Kunka New Town, advised parents to take advantage of the Government’s Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme and send their children to school instead of engaging them in worst forms of labour.
Nana Ponko II, chief of Dompoase-Abadiekyere, appealed to managers of the facility to enforce rules and regulations governing the place to ensure discipline.
