Afro and urban gospel artiste, Scott Evans, has observed that gospel music videos used to lack quality until the emergence of the urban gospel genre in the country.
Although he believes urban gospel has not yet gained the full attention of music lovers, “we brought a different craft into that [gospel videos] and changed the face of gospel music.”
In an interview on Joy FM’s The Reason Is Jesus, Sunday, the musician contended that “urban gospel changed the face of gospel videos because in our videos, we didn’t stand on flower pots.”
Scott recounted, for instance, moments when people watched a video of his song and commended him for putting up such eye-catching visuals, something unusual with local gospel music videos.
“I wouldn’t say we have arrived, but I could say that we have made significant progress, because way back in the years, there was no space for us [urban gospel musicians]; there was no way.
“I think we’ve been consistent, we’ve been persistent and we’ve been working so hard; we’ve been investing in the craft, in the promo, in videos. I think urban gospel changed the face of gospel videos. Because in our videos, we didn’t stand on flower pots,” he added.
Meanwhile, he has asked people not to focus on his riches but on the fact that he has the grace of God that leads him in all he does.
This is because despite the grace of God, he also works hard to achieve his dreams.
“I have grace ultimately and I work. If you have grace, and you work, you will get money. There is a job that I do, and there is a profession and a career. So I have a job and a career that I am pursuing, but you need to work to make a livelihood. The Bible even says it.
“I do logistics. I am into shipping, which is imports and exports. That is what I do, but the focus shouldn’t be on the fact that I have money, but they should focus on the fact that I have the grace of God and I work so hard,” he said.
The 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) ‘Best New Artiste of the Year’ nominee urged the youth to work hard in addition to knowing God in the quest to achieve their dreams.
