The Paramount chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area, Osagyefo Ampem Anyye Amoampong Tabrako III, has called on the government to upgrade Wenchi Agricultural College to a university.
He said upgrading the Wenchi Agricultural College to a University will enhance the training of students to provide the needed human resource base for the agricultural sector.
He emphasised that “It will also increase production and sustain the interest of the youth in the government's policy on planting for food and Jobs.
Osagyefo Tabrako made the appeal when the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) paid a courtesy call on him at the Ahenfie Yefiri Royal Palace in Wenchi to seek his blessings ahead of the December 7 elections.
He also asked for the establishment of a cashew processing factory and further called for the revamping of abandoned agricultural facilities such as Animal Husbandry, the Wenchi Tomato Factory (TOMACAN), Mechanisation, and State farms to help create employment for the teeming youth in the area.
The paramount chief of Wenchi also appealed to the Vice President to ensure the upgrading of Wenchi town roads and the construction of other roads leading to communities within the Wenchi municipality.
Responding to the Wench chief's request, Dr Bawumia said agriculture is the number one priority in his manifesto.
He pledged to talk to contractors working on the Wenchi town roads to return to the site as soon as possible.
"I have seen the state of your roads, and I will work assiduously to get them in good shape, so please just exercise patience, and we will fix them," Dr Bawumia promised.
He reiterated his campaign promise of amending the chieftaincy to empower traditional rulers.
“Governments over the years have not involved chiefs enough in governing the country, so I want to change that and amend section 63(d) of the Chieftaincy Act to empower chiefs to help us govern this country,” Dr Bawumia stated.
The flagbearer of the NPP also pledged to increase the living allowance for Paramount Chiefs and give allowances to Divisional Chiefs and Queen Mothers.
“We are saying that we need to pay a befitting living allowance to the paramount chiefs and include the Divisional Chiefs and the Queen Mothers,” he explained.
