The Concern Students Association of the University of Ghana is demanding the immediate removal of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo from office over what they described as her lack of leadership.
The group also criticised the Vice Chancellor for her knee-jerk approach in resolving students' matters.
The concerned students therefore abandoned lectures and converged at the Obra Spot in Accra, for a demonstration dubbed, ‘Ya Br3 Mo’ (We are tired of you) on Friday.
Amidst chanting and drumming, they marched through the principal streets of Accra to the Independence Square, where they presented a petition to the Ministry of Education.
The students also demanded the following:
- Students demand a refund of the unlawful monies they have been charged as school fees and the reversal of the unreasonable and exorbitant prices of residential accommodation on campus.
- We demand that Management of the University comes up with a clear plan on solving accommodation problems. Lasting solutions have to be meted out to this long existing problem immediately. Also starting from this year, students want to see hostels springing up on the University campus.
- Students demand that University Management reverses their decision on the academic fees increment and immediately comply to the Minister of Education's directive on the 2021/2022 academic year lets increment.
- We demand an immediate reversal of the "IN-OUT-OUT-OUT' policy which has proven not to solve the accommodation problems but rather incurs several challenges on students.
- Students demand reinstatement of JCRs of both Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall and also demand the Hall Master and Senior Tutor of Commonwealth hall re-instated immediately.
- Also, we demand that Management shows concern to the rampant cases of scam where innocent students and parents/guardians are robbed of their hard earned money, and the situation of 'protocol* fees paid by students and parents/guardians to be able to secure accommodation.
- We demand a stop to student brutalities.
- We demand the issue of all unaccredited courses resolved.
- Lift of ban on hall week celebrations and the hypocritical ban on public gatherings as well.
