The Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu has revealed that the school sent more than 12 athletes abroad for further studies and to continue their sporting career.
In an interview with JoySports, Dr Bitugu stated that the school has been a key contributor to the growth of athletics in Ghana, and would be proud to host them when they return to the country for the African Games next month.
"We are hosting it [African Games], and they are coming home.
"Our [Benjamin] Azamati who we groomed from zero is coming home, and many other athletes are coming - both local ones and those who are outside Ghana are coming," he said.
The school is much noted for contributing to the growth of athletes like Benjamin Azamati, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, Isaac Botsio, James Dadzie, Grace Obour, and Aziz Mohammed, with many of them studying abroad.1
Azamati, while a student at the University of Ghana, was part of Ghana's 4x100m quartet that won gold at the African Games in Rabat in 2019.
Dr Bitugu, who is the venue manager of the Legon Stadium says they continue to churn out athletes and would create a conducive environment for them to develop.
"The University of Ghana in the last two years has sent more than 12 athletes outside the country for further studies, etc, and they will be coming home.
"We look forward to having them, and also to giving other athletes from other parts of the continent that Ghanaian hospitality, and also for them to get to know the University of Ghana.
"I am excited about this event and as the venue manager, I cannot wait to show them around and show them what we have got."
The African Games will start on March 8, and end on March 23, 2024.
