An uneasy calm has returned to the Bunkprugu-Yunyoo district following the arrival of a combined team of police and military personnel yesterday, after fighting at Yunyoo between Bimobas and Mamprusis last Sunday over a disputed farm land spread to other communities.
Five people were reportedly killed and 24 houses burnt in the first day of the violence.
On Wednesday, about six villages and the police station at Yunyoo, were burned down while many people fled the area to seek refuge in nearby communities.
According to a police source, although there was no exchange of gunshots in the area, as at yesterday morning residents still remained indoors.
The source said the combatants have gone into hiding, leaving behind only women and children in some of the communities.
Three people were arrested and some weapons, including AK47 assault rifles, were seized after the owners threw them away on seeing the military.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, Ephraim Barakatu told the Times that the re-enforcement of the security personnel would help calm the situation, adding that his office had not received any negative reports from the place as at yesterday (Thursday).
Mr Barakatu said the security personnel were in firm control as they patrol the district 24 hours.
Moses Azuma, a resident, pleaded with the authorities to search for lasting peace to end recurring violence in the district, recalling that a similar incident broke out between the two ethnic groups last year.
