It has become somehow established that since the return to constitutional rule in the fourth republic, the two political forces, the NPP and the NDC have always exited at the end of their second tenure. This may be due to the despondency of their own party members, seeming lack of ideas, or rejection by floating voters.
The NDC suffered despondency and near disintegration in 2000 with the Swedru declaration which accentuated the victory cry of the NPP that year.
In 2008, the NPP suffered a similar fate with the then-sitting President J.A Kufuor backing a candidate that would turn out not to be the party's choice at the Legon Congress.
Even though the NPP led in the first round of voting that year, it had to lose power painfully by a hair's breadth, the first of the kind in African politics.
As we await the Supreme Court verdict in the not too distant future, tongues have already been set wagging as to who the successor of Nana Addo would be in the party, in a manner that would not see a repeat of 2008.
For some of us who have been in this party's politics in the last two decades, the stakes of 2024 are completely different from those of the dying embers of the Kufuor era.
This time, the NPP, inadvertently built a solid candidate waiting only to be slotted in by the delegates with little or no sweat at all for a sweet cruise to a third historic victory.
Bawumia's Rise to Stardom
The Oxford and Simon Fraser University-trained economist and banker has established himself not only as an institution in the party but also as a political colossus at the mention whose name the NDC begin to pander.
He burst into the scene as one of the finest technocrats, with little political disposition but has blossomed into a catch-phrase on the lips of all politically savvy citizens of this nation in recent times.
A lot has gone into his political development within the last thirteen years to the point that he is unparalleled when it comes to leading the NPP to break the eight-year jinx.
This is the man who was able to stay the course after 2008 even though he had the opportunity of taking up international engagements when they beckoned. It was no surprise then that the party and candidate settled on him again in 2012 as the running mate of our great party.
Role in Supreme Court 2013
After losing the election again that year, his tenacity, his exploits, his intelligence, his eloquence, and composure kept hope alive in party supporters and gave us the strong feeling that we were on our way to winning the first-ever election petition.
He stood on his feet for eight good months defending answering incisive, boring and sometimes irritating questions, from respondents’ lawyers and members of the bench.
He became the punching bag of all the NDC communicators when he came out with his innovative lecture series prior to the 2016 elections.
These lectures dealt a deadly blow to the NDC campaign in that election as there was no match in the entire NDC to diffuse his overwhelming impact. This was a huge boost to the 2016 campaign.
State of The Art Veep
Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the most technologically savvy Vice President in the history of this republic. He is instrumental in the automation of our ports which is raking in revenues in ways one would never imagine.
He is the brainchild of the digital property addressing system as well as the GhQR code system, all aimed at removing the bottlenecks in locating people and doing business. As part of his derive for a technological Ghana, he introduced the GoG project validation and the project tracker.
The aim is to make known to the citizenry, the number of government projects (complete and ongoing) across the length and breadth of the country, making the government more accountable.
There no denying that a good product needs no advertisement and Dr Bawumia’s stature in the NPP at the moment, makes him stand out, he is streets ahead of any contender(s) or potential contender(s).
Thank You.
