The University of Ghana has denounced some statements made by the Founder and President of World Miracle Outreach, Rev. Lawrence Tetteh regarding students of the institution.

In an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, the preacher indicated that there is a high prevalence of HIV infections among students at the University.

“The number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive, you would have the biggest shock of your life. This is sad, this is sad and I’m happy I’m saying this on national TV," he said on October 24.

“Some of these young boys and young girls already on campus are living promiscuous lives and they have already contracted HIV/AIDS. These are people I have prayed for... and I’m not talking about 10 years, 5 years,” the pastor added.

But in a press release dated October 24, 2024, the University labeled Rev. Tetteh’s remarks as “unfounded, insensitive, and disappointing,” noting that his assertions lack any data-backed evidence and risk promoting fear, stigma, and misinformation.

The University emphasised that HIV status can only be determined through scientific diagnostic methods and not through counselling or prayer.

“Public discussions around HIV/AIDS must be grounded in verified facts, not speculation,” the statement read, further stressing that unfounded statements may sensationalize the issue, potentially undermining the confidentiality and dignity of those affected.

The statement was signed by UG's Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah.

The University highlighted its proactive measures to promote health and wellness, including compulsory medical exams conducted by the University Health Services Directorate and confidential counselling services available through the Careers and Counselling Directorate.

In light of these concerns, the University has requested a formal apology and retraction from Rev. Tetteh and GTV, urging both the media and the public to approach sensitive health topics with caution, focusing on verified information over unsubstantiated claims.
