Academics and experts have convened in Ghana to discuss strategies for enhancing peace and safety in Ukraine through the African Peace Mission.
They emphasized the need for comprehensive international support, encompassing economic, security, and diplomatic aid, to bolster Ukraine's efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability.
The Ukraine war has ravaged the country, causing devastating destruction and a dire humanitarian crisis, following Russia's invasion.
The conflict has forced countless people to flee their homes, sparked far-reaching global economic repercussions, and drawn widespread international condemnation, leading to severe sanctions against Russia.
Amidst the chaos, a concerted effort persists to broker a peaceful resolution and end the suffering.
The Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA) hosted the event, "African Peace Mission and the Ukraine Peace Formula: Conversations on Regional Security, Nuclear Safety, and Human Rights Perspectives," where Ukrainian experts delved into critical discussions on regional security, nuclear safety, and human rights implications of the Ukraine war.
The gathering explored key challenges the conflict poses for global governance and safety, fostering insightful conversations and perspectives.
An expert in Comparative Politics at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy (UKMA), Professor Oleksiy Haran, emphasized that Ukraine's endeavours to address the ongoing conflict will be futile without the backing and solidarity of the global community, underscoring the crucial need for international support and cooperation.
A leading Energy Security expert at DiXi Group, Olena Lapenko, highlighted the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) initiatives to guarantee nuclear safety in Ukraine, revealing that resolutions have been passed calling for the swift and complete handover of the Nuclear Power Plant to Ukrainian control, ensuring the country's full authority over this critical infrastructure.
The event provided a platform for Ghanaian experts to engage deeply with Ukrainian experts, who presented three policy briefs on key thematic areas.
This exchange enabled the Ghanaian experts to offer insightful recommendations on enhancing the visibility and impact of the African Peace Mission in supporting Ukraine's peace restoration efforts.
Hosted by a coalition of organizations including the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA), Institute of Justice and Reconciliation, Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Charitable Foundation, Democratic Institute Foundation (DIF), with support from Penplusbytes, marked the culmination of a two-event series in Ghana focused on promoting peace and reconciliation in Ukraine.
