Tyson Gay handed Usain Bolt only his second professional 100m defeat as the American stormed to victory at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm. Gay clocked 9.84 seconds to beat the fit-again 23-year-old Jamaican by 0.13s and record his first ever win over the World and Olympic champion over 100m. In a race missing injured Asafa Powell, Richard Thompson was third in 10.10s. Britain's Michael Rimmer impressed in the 800m but was again edged out by European champion Marcin Lewandowski. Rimmer's defeat came just a week after being agonisingly denied European gold following a late dip by the Pole in Barcelona. With perfect conditions in Sweden for sprinting, Bolt and Gay - the world's two fastest 100m runners in history - exchanged a touch of hands as they prepared to face each other over this distance for only the third time. Despite the Jamaican having struggled this season with an Achilles tendon injury, few would have expected the manner in which the 27-year-old from Kentucky cruised through in Sweden's 1912 Olympic stadium. Gay, who impressed out of the blocks and dominated his fierce rival from the halfway stage, said: "It feels great to beat Usain but deep down inside I know he is not 100%. I look forward to beating him when he is 100%. "Usain knows what his limitations are. His goal this year was to go undefeated, not set world records. He has plenty left in the tank. "It was very important to beat someone like that for the fans and the sport. My body worked well today, I was excited and motivated." Bolt, who admitted before this race that he had "slacked off" in training earlier in the season, said: "You can get beat any day. You have good days and bad days. "I still need to work on my strength. The first 10 metres was rubbish. I had no power, no nothing. I have tried to work on it but it didn't work out. "I was ready but the two stand-ups annoyed me. But Tyson was in better shape than me and was better prepared." Powell, unable to race on Friday because of ongoing back problems, was the last man to beat Bolt over 100m, two years ago in the same Swedish city. Since that defeat, the world record holder had enjoyed 14 successive wins, including the last time he clashed with Gay, at last summer's World Championships in Berlin. It was in that race that Bolt set the current 100m world record of 9.58s and was the last time he defeated Gay, one year after their first head-to-head in New York in 2008. Gay's Diamond League winning time was only two hundredths of a second slower than the season's best of 9.82s - a time run by both Bolt and Powell. Powell, Gay and Bolt are scheduled to face each other at the final Diamond League meeting of the year in Brussels on 27 August. Britain's Marlon Devonish failed to make the 100m final after finishing only fifth (10.32s) in the first heat, while GB duo Steph Twell and Hannah England were ninth and 14th in a 1500m race won by Nancy Jebet Langat. In other events, Russian Darya Klishna won the women's long jump with 6.78m, Croatian superstar Blanka Vlasic won the high jump with 2.02m andAllyson Felix came through the 200m in 22.41s. In the men's events, a 84.41m throw by Finland's Tero Pitkamaki produced a shocked defeat over World, Olympic and European champion Andreas Thorkildsen, while American Bershawn Jackson clocked 47.65 to take the honours in the 400m hurdles.
