A bloody spectacle was enacted at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region on Friday, when a 48-year-old man, identified only as Kofi K, butchered his age-old friend with a machete before an angry mob visited instant justice on him (Kofi).
Nobody could figure out what prompted Kofi to turn the machete on his friend, Atta Kwaku Snr., 40, in such a brutal manner, especially as they had been seen together in the day without any sign of trouble between them.
The Assembly Member for Mpasatia, Mr Maxwell Osei Bonsu, told the Daily Graphic that Kofi and Atta, both farmers, had been friends for a very long time and that there had never been a single time that they had been seen fighting.
Kofi lived at Toase, while Atta was resident at Mpasatia, both in the Atwima Mponua District, and they used to visit each other.
According to the assembly member, a number of people in the town had claimed that last Friday, Kofi visited Atta at Mpasatia in the morning and later left for Toase.
In the course of the day, Kofi allegedly called Atta on his mobile phone to inform him that he would return to Mpasatia. Mr Bonsu said Atta, who was outside his house, went back home to find Kofi sleeping on the bed in his (Atta's) room. A girl in the house later heard some struggle going in the room and when she went in to find out what was happening, she saw Kofi lying on top of Atta on the bed.
The girl left the room, thinking that what she had seen was not anything serious, but it turned out to be the beginning of the end of the two friends.
Moments afterwards, Atta was heard shouting that Kofi was killing him and, therefore, called for help.
When two women in the house went into the room, they saw Kofi slashing the hapless Atta with the machete. Kofi warned the women to go out or they would be killed.
It was a horrifying sight and the two women shouted for people to go to Atta's rescue.
Before rescuers could go in, however, Kofi had killed his friend by opening a number of cuts on his head, neck and hands, after which he placed the blood-soaked body on a chair in the room.
Kofi then attempted to run away but a mob pounced on him and lynched him.
The police confirmed the incident and said they were investigating the case.
