Two suspected armed robbers who have been snatching taxicabs from their drivers at gun point have been arrested by the Adenta Police.
The suspects, Kwadwo Eric alias Cashman and his accomplice, Hannah Martey, a prostitute, were arrested after months of investigations by the police after committing their sixth robbery.
The suspects usually snatched the cars from their owners, collected whatever money was in their possession as well as other valuables, took the cars away and later abandoned them.
Speaking to the media the Adenta Police District Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yao Tettegah, said on April 30, 2008 at 12 midnight, Cashman and Hannah went to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle as a couple and hired the services of a taxi driver to Adenta.
He said Godfred Sakyi, the driver of KIA Pride with registration number GR3867T, charged them seven Ghana Cedis for the trip.
On getting to Adenta Lotto Kiosk, Cashman allegedly pulled out a locally manufactured pistol and ordered the driver to drive towards Adenta Commando.
DSP Mr. Tettegah continued that at Adenta Commando the suspects ordered the driver to surrender all the money on him as well as his mobile phone, which he did, but Cashman was said to have shot him from behind and sped away with the taxi.
He mentioned that the robbers took the car to Nuaso in the Eastern Region, Hannah’s hometown.
According to the District Commander, Sakyi was found the following day in a pool of blood by a ‘Good Samaritan’, who brought him to the police station and told the police what had happened to him.
He was then sent to the Police Hospital where he was admitted for some weeks before being discharged.
DSP Tettegah said on May 2, 2008, the suspects were spraying the taxicab when the police had a tip-off and rushed to the scene and Hannah was apprehended but Cashman managed to escape.
Cashman however ran out of luck when after two months of intensive search he was arrested at his hideout at Odorkor, a suburb of Accra.
Both suspects have since been put before the Madina Magistrate Court and have been remanded into police custody to reappear on July 17, 2008.
DSP Tettegah mentioned that since the arrest of the suspects car snatching incidents have not been heard of again in the area.
He appealed to the public, especially those whose cars had been snatched, to come to the station to identify the suspects.
DSP Mr. Tettegah advised those in the sprawling areas of Adenta to be security-conscious and not hesitate to seek police assistance during emergencies.
He promised that the police would continue to intensify their night patrols to cover all areas including non-accessible areas.
