The Trades Union Congress has given government and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission up to the 13th of next month to respond to grievances submitted by labour on the recent hikes in utility tariffs.
Secretary-General, Kofi Asamoah, will not say what action the union will resort to upon expiration of the ultimatum, but tells Joy News workers will continue to wear red bands in protest of the new tariffs.
“Indeed if we allow this to stay it is going to create a lot of hardships for both the working people and the poor in society. And it is really not acceptable. Workers are saying we can’t pay.
“We want engagements to determine what is practicable in relation to income levels and the living conditions now.
“We are now discussing with the workers and whatever decisions that workers decide we should take, we will take," he stated.
Mr Asamoah said the two week ultimatum is just to alert government and the PURC to take the issue more seriously, adding they will decide on the next line of action after the deadline expires.
According to him the TUC is not totally against the increase except that it finds it insensitive and unfair
