Teacher Trainees across the forty-six (46) public Colleges of Education in Ghana are displeased with the government over what they say is the undue delay in the payment of their allowances.
According to them, the payment of the allowances, which has stalled for six (6) months, is making life unbearable for them.
"We are sorry at this juncture that we are not enjoying our stay in colleges but rather, seriously suffering. It must be stated without equivocation that the undue delay in the payment of the allowance has, and is really causing most teacher trainees unease," they lamented.
In a press release dated October 5, 2021, the Teacher Trainees' Association of Ghana (TTAG) recounted that several attempts they have made to get their issues addressed have all proven futile.
"The leadership of TTAG on several occasions has engaged the Minister for Education, Director-General for Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the CEO for Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) to seek the prompt payment of the teacher trainees' allowance but the results have always been the same," the Association said.
The Secretariat of TTAG highlighted that most of the students, who largely depend on the allowance to pay for their fees and cater for their domestic needs, also missed out on the opportunity to undertake their end-of-semester examinations and observations.
They are giving the government three weeks to redeem its pledge to trainees.
"We are hereby giving the giving three weeks ultimatum starting today for the government to pay the arrears of six months allowance to us else, we shall take appropriate actions to ensure that our voices are heard," they warned.
