It was triple delight for Ghana at the Bukom Boxing Arena as Richard Commey, Frederick Lawson and Duke Micah made the nation proud claiming various WBC titles at stake at the Freedom Fight Night.
The bouts put together by Streetwise Promotions in conjunction with Errol Hawk Sports Management was part of Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebrations drew President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, Youth and Sports minister Isaac Asiamah as well ex-world champions Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey and Alfred Kotey.
And it was Duke Micah who set the ball rolling with a knockout victory over Mexico’s Jonathan Aguilar as he stopped the Mexican in round nine to win the vacant WBC international bantamweight title.
Micah who is the reigning Commonwealth bantamweight champion has added the WBC international bantamweight belt to his collections as well as going 23 unbeaten.
Frederick Lawson continued from there with a majority decision (116-113, 114-114 and 119-109) victory over Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings to win the vacant WBC international silver welterweight belt.
Despite showing signs of rust after almost 2 years out of the canvas, Lawson stood tall to claim the title at stake.
In the main bout, Richard Commey claimed a unanimous decision win over Belgium’s Hedi Slimani, with a 116-112, 117-113 and 116-112 win.
The Ghanaian who was looking for an instant knockout after two successive defeats began on a frantic note opening a deep cut beneath Slimani’s left eye but his opponent stood tall to ensure the fight lasted the distance.
Commey has improved his fight record to 25-2, (22 KO’s), with the only blights coming against Denis Shafikov and Robert Easter Jnr while Slimani record stands at 26-3, (14 KO’s).
