The Berekum Constituency Office of the Ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was on Tuesday July 29, 2008, turned into a boxing arena when the Constituency's First Vice-Chairman, Mr. Nuro Bediako clashed with a 35-year-old polling station chairman, Wilson Gyamfi.
The ferocious battle between the two allegedly resulted in the death of Wilson Gyamfi, after Mr. Nuro Bediako reportedly knocked him down.
The deceased reportedly hit his head against a stone on the ground and bled profusely.
He was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital and later referred to the Okomfo Anokye Teachig Hospital in Kumasi where he died.
Authorities in the Holy Family Hospital said Wilson was brought to the facility with “head injury”.
Following the incident, Mr. Nuro Bediako was nearly lynched by an angry mob in the constituency.
He has been charged provisionally with murder at the Berekum Magistrates’ court presided over by Mr. Sam Nibi.
The incident came about when the deceased asked Mr. Bediako why his name had been removed from the list of polling station agents.
The inquiry resulted in a heated argument between the two culminating in the incident.
