The Dutor of the Anlo Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Torgbuiga Wenya III has cleared the air on the controversy surrounding the traditional leadership roles of the people of Anlo.
There has been public outcry, especially among indigenes of the Anlo Kingdom following the installation of both Torgbuiga Wenya III and Mamaga Abui Buiekpor II about who is the true leader of the Anlo Kingdom.
Speaking to the media after the launch of the 2023 Higbetsotso Za, Torgbuiga Wenya III indicated that there is “no confusion” clarifying that the hierarchy of the Anlo Kingdom was established since pre-colonial era and has been practiced as enshrined by the forefathers.
“The Wenya Dynasty is an uncle to the Awomefia Dynasty and so always they are enthroned on the laps of their uncle, so they work with him, so there is no confusion”, he said.
He recounted that the Anlo Kingdom was established and Kinged by Dutor Torgbuiga Wenya I, who served as the Customary Overlord until his demise.
"His nephew was thereafter enthroned as the Awomefia."
Torgbuiga Wenya III said that the Awomefia was subsequently made the Paramount Chief of the Anlo Kingdom by the colonial masters during the slave trade era to serve as the administrative head.
“When the white people took over the reign, along the Slave Coast - from Elmina to Dahomey was designated as the slave coast. And so they introduced the paramountcies so they made him [Awomefia] a Paramount Chief as the administrative head. But then there was a Customary Overlord that is Dutor Wenya I”, he explained.
He further said kingmakers of the Anlo Kingdom enstooled Dutor Torgbuiga Wenya II in July 1956, and Awomefia Adaladza II in December 1957 “on the lap of Dutor Torgbuiga Wenya II”
He stressed that he would work closely with the Awomefia Torgbui Sri III to restore the glory of the Anlo Kingdom.
“We are waking up as the sleeping giants to take our prime or place in the history of Ghana”, he assured.
