The Tongu Chiefs Union, an amalgamation of the leaders of the 13 traditional areas in the North, Central, and South Tongu districts in the Volta Region is scheduled to be launched between 19th and 24th August, 2024.

The launch which would take place in Juapong would cement the official establishment of the association.

The Union was proposed in a bid to form a synergy towards the common good of the Tongu districts and give traditional authorities a united front.

It is expected to catalyse addressing the pressing challenges of underdevelopment, poor access to health, water and education, unemployment, and other challenges.

Speaking at the press launch, the Paramount Chief of Sokpoe Traditional Area, and President of the Tongu Chiefs Union, Togbega Kadzi Zoga acknowledged the frontiers and their foresight to establish the union.

He stressed the importance of Tongu having a unified voice to foster development and impress on the government to tackle the numerous challenges in the area.

He assured of his commitment to achieving the goals, objectives, and aspirations of the Tongu Chiefs Union and implored the residents to support the Union.

“The time has come for us to unite. We thank the brains behind this initiative. I promise that we will achieve all the objectives of the Union. So, we must all prepare ourselves to make Tongu better”, he said.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa lauded the initiative and congratulated the traditional authorities in the Tongu area.

He asserted that the Union would give them a uniform voice which would compel politicians and other stakeholders to identify them as a formidable force and reckon their submissions and suggestions.

He extolled the unity among traditional authorities in the area and stressed the imperative for their counterparts in other parts of the country work to pick a cue from this and look beyond artificial boundaries.

“This is a very inspirational message that our Tongu chiefs are sending to the whole of Ghana that there is no need to fight over artificial division, there is no need to worry about artificial boundaries, at the end of the day, we are one people.

"We have a common destiny and what affects one, affects the other, when another rises, we also rise. And when we come together, there is unity and when that unity is pursued, we can only be stronger, we can only be better, and we can only triumph over all the challenges that we face”, he said.
