The Ministry of Transportation is considering mechanising toll booths in the country to improve efficiency in revenue collection and accountability, Felix Owusu-Adjapong, the acting Minister of Transportation, told Parliament yesterday.
In addition, he said the Ministry would in future, consider placing toll booths on all major national roads, once the roads have been rehabilitated.
Mr Owusu Adjapong (NPP Akim Swedru) was responding to question from Members of Parliament who had raised concerns about the operations of the toll booths.
The Minister said road construction was an expensive investment, hence the need to generate more resources to keep them in good shape to promote economic activities.
The Minister said toll booth operators who were not performing satisfactorily had their contracts terminated.
He said there were 25 toll booths across the country, with the exception of the Upper West Region.
Mr Owusu-Adjapong also answered questions on the status of road projects in some constituencies.
He said some of the projects were terminated as a result of non-performance by the contractors.
He indicated that a five-kilometre stretch of the Sefwi-Wiawso-Akontombra road and three kilometres of road in the Kintampo township awarded to Messrs Kingsman Enterprise Limited and Seidu Mahama were terminated and re-awarded due to non-performance.
He added that bidding for the upgrading of a part of the Missiga-Kulungugu road in the Upper East Region was advertised in May but the tender could not be opened on the specific date and had been scheduled to be re-advertised by the end of the month.
Earlier, Freddie Blay, the First Deputy Speaker, who was in the chair, referred the President’s nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report.
It is expected that vetting of the nominees would take place on Monday.
